Hepatitis B vaccine helps protect against hepatitis B infection.
Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by a virus that's spread through blood and body fluids (e.g. blood, semen, vaginal secretion, saliva).
Hepatitis B vaccine is given by intramuscular (into the muscle) injection.
Your doctor or nurse will administer this vaccine for you.
This medicine is usually given in a series of injection. Your doctor will advise you with your vaccination schedules. You must complete the entire course of the medicine.
Ensure that you keep all appointments with the doctor so that you do not miss any immunisations.
If you miss an appointment or an injection, alert your doctor or nurse. A replacement appointment or injection should be given as soon as possible.
Alert your doctor if you ever had an allergic reaction (rashes, breathlessness, swollen eyes) to Hepatitis B vaccine.
Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- low immunity due to illness, certain medication or radiation therapy
- bleeding disorders
- kidney disease
Vaccination should be postponed to premature babies, or if you are ill, with fever or with an infection.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor may need to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication.
Hepatitis B vaccine may cause drowsiness or dizziness. If affected, do not drive or take part in any activity in which you need to be alert.
Other side effects may include any of the following: tiredness, irritability, headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain or discomfort, loss of appetite, muscle or joint pain, fever, flu-like symptoms and injection site reactions e.g. redness, pain or swelling.
Brief fainting spells can happen after vaccination. Sitting or lying down for about 15 minutes after a vaccination can help prevent fainting and injuries caused by falls.
Some side effects may need immediate medical help. Alert your doctor quickly if you experience any breathlessness, having rashes or swollen eyes. These could be signs of an allergic reaction.
Inform the doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify the doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
